Dated back as far as 1823, the park was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and is a part of the City of San Diego's 544-acre park system and includes four historical districts. The park is home to approximately 250 plant species and 150 animal species, including famous resident elk, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, gophers, and rattlesnakes.
